Windows 8 and Windows 10 integrates a more robust version of Windows Defender (and uses that name) for its anti-virus and anti-malware protection. Windows 8/10 Defender provides the same level of protection against malware as Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) provides on older operation systems and uses the same daily virus definition updates. If you use Microsoft Security Essentials, you don’t need Windows Defender. When you download Microsoft Security Essentials, it will turn off (but not uninstall) Windows Defender automatically. It does this so that you don’t have two programs on your computer that are doing the same thing.
Security EssentialsMicrosoft introduced Security Essentials to cover the gap left open by Windows Defender. MSE was designed to provide real-time protection against a fuller range of malicious software than its predecessor. MSE defends against malware like viruses and worms, Trojans, rootkits, spyware and others. Installing Security Essentials disables Defender, if present, as part of its install procedure.
On Windows XP, MSE actually deletes Defender. It is never a good idea to install multiple anti-malware products because they sometimes interfere with each other and cause performance problems.
